History & Mission | Board Members
The mission of St. Francis Foundation is to promote and support ministries sponsored by the Felician Sisters in the Milwaukee communities through fund-raising activities.
We fulfill our mission by:
- Developing quality relationships
- Practicing ethical standards and responsible stewardship
- Responding with special concern for persons in need

The St. Francis Foundation of Milwaukee provides philanthropic support to Felician sponsored ministries in Milwaukee.
The Felician Sisters, a religious order of Franciscan woman, was established in 1855 in Warsaw, Poland. Their ministry consisted of service to the poor, orphaned, sick and elderly. In 1874, the Sisters accepted their first US ministry in Polonia, Wisconsin and expanded their services to Milwaukee in 1907 with the opening of an orphanage on Milwaukee's south side. In Milwaukee today, the Felician Sisters sponsor the Child Development Center of St. Joseph and Villa St. Francis. The Sisters also co-sponsor St. Francis Hospital and The Terrace at St. Francis with the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters. The Felician Sisters are grateful for the support of the Milwaukee community during their century of service.

In 1968, St. Francis Foundation incorporated with the mission of building financial support for the ministries of the Felician Sisters in the Milwaukee community. Since that time, the Foundation has raised funds and provided support for Felician-sponsored ministries with special concern for the needs of the poor and those who otherwise would not be able to receive high quality care in a dignified setting. From 1968 through 2004, St. Francis Foundation's philanthropy for St. Francis Hospital was the primary focus.
In 2005, St. Francis Foundation of Milwaukee organized to focus philanthropic activities to benefit the Child Development Center of St. Joseph and Villa St. Francis, leaving The Foundation for St. Francis Hospital to serve the hospital's fund development needs.
The Child Development Center of St. Joseph, which celebrated 100 years of caring in 2007, provides quality child care and early childhood education for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years. Villa St. Francis, an assisted living, residential community, offers a home to over 100 seniors.
