Touching Lives - Stories
Stories
Revitalizing a Life Mike and his brother Pat, both life-long bachelors, moved into Villa St. Francis at around the same time. Pat, Mike's younger brother was vibrant, social and immediately participated in Villa activities. Mike was in a wheelchair, withdrawn and stayed in his room most of the time. Villa staff, concerned for Mike, knew that if his frail condition did not improve he would soon require nursing home care.
Villa staff worked with Mike. His interest in food increased as staff encouraged him to eat and enjoy the balanced meals served. Additionally staff closely managed and monitored Mike's medications. As Mike gained strength, he started emerging from his "shell". He began attending more activities with other residents. A more socially engaged Mike initiated conversation with fellow residents and staff.
As Mike's physical health improved, he chose to trade his wheelchair for a cane--preferring to walk instead of ride.
Pat and Mike enjoy life at the Villa. Mike is becoming increasingly more social. He rarely misses a party and is constantly engaged in activities.
Billy Billy is six years old and a bundle of energy. When he first came to the Child Development Center, he challenged his teachers and teased classmates. Center staff knew Billy was a good kid and that his boundless energy needed redirection. Billy enrolled in the Center's summer program (KidQuest) that included swimming lessons. Billy had never been in a pool before. For the first few lessons, he clung to his teacher when he got in the water. By the end of the summer, Billy was sliding down the slide and putting his face in the water. Each time he reached a new swimming milestone, he gladly called to his teacher to watch.
Billy is looking forward to KidQuest 2008 and enjoying his swimming.
